Diamond Python


Diamond Python is the common name of this medium-sized snake found in Australia and New Guinea, which is also known as the diamond snake. A member of the python family and is named for diamond-shaped markings of yellow and black on the back and sides. The diamond python’s average length is about 2.4 m (about 8 ft), for other individuals up to 4.2 m (14 ft) in length have been found. Like all pythons, the diamond python uses constriction rather than venom to kill its prey. The name diamond python is also sometimes used for the Australian copperhead, a venomous snake in the cobra family that is unrelated to true pythons.

Scientific classification: The diamond python belongs to the family Pythonidae. It is classified as Morelia spilota spilota.
